Why Stored Fuel Degrades

Fuel is not indefinitely stable. In storage, oxygen dissolved in the fuel initiates oxidative chain reactions, forming hydroperoxides that decompose into gums, varnishes, and acids. Water ingress from condensation or tank breathing promotes microbial growth, accelerates corrosion, and causes phase separation in ethanol-blended gasoline. The combined effect is darkened fuel, sediment formation, filter plugging, and ultimately an engine or generator that fails to start when most needed, during power outages or emergency activation.

This is a particular concern in tropical climates where elevated temperatures accelerate all degradation mechanisms, and for standby assets, generators at hospitals, data centers, remote facilities, that may sit unused for many months between tests or emergency operation.

Storage degradation timeline (untreated diesel): Visible degradation typically begins at 6–12 months. At 1–2 years, gum content rises sharply and filter plugging becomes likely. Beyond 2 years, significant sediment and dark coloration indicate fuel that may require reconditioning or replacement before use. Stabilised fuel at correct treat rates can extend safe storage to 3–5 years or longer.

Applications

ApplicationStorage RiskStabiliser Approach
Standby / Emergency GeneratorsDiesel sits unused; oxidation, water ingress, microbial growth in hot/humid conditionsAnnual stabiliser dose at fill; optional biocide for humid locations; periodic fuel testing recommended
Military and Strategic Reserves5–10 year storage mandated; fuel must be operationally ready on demandHigh-performance stabiliser + antioxidant package; compliance testing to applicable military specifications
